Merging of Activity Log for MainWP into WP Activity Log – Breaking change

Date: 24th May 2024

We are committed to plugin excellence, helping our customers improve their WordPress management and security. To this end, we have recently been making considerable investments in all our plugins, including code refactoring. This enables us to offer our customers plugins that deliver market-leading features, speed, and performance.

To ensure we can continue to do this effectively, we have merged the Activity Log for MainWP extension with WP Activity Log. This change came into effect from WP Activity Log version 5. This will allow us to rope in the resources we are dedicating to WP Activity Log in the continued support of MainWP.

While Activity Log for MainWP might be considered a niche plugin, we are nevertheless fully committed to our customers who use it. By merging Activity Log for MainWP with WP Activity Log, we can ensure its continued sustainability and success.

What this means to you

From version 5.0 onwards, all core functionality available in Activity Log For MainWP has been included in WP Activity Log. From this point onwards, Activity Log For MainWP will stop receiving updates.

You can continue using Activity Log for MainWP, however there will be no further updates for this extension. We thus encourage you to switch to the latest version of WP Activity Log, as explained in the section below, ‘How to update from Activity Log for MainWP to WP Activity Log.’

Important: Features like Search Filters and Reports are not available in the free version of WP Activity Log. As such, you will need to upgrade to a premium plan to use these features. You can check the WP Activity Log pricing page to see what’s included with each plan.

Important changes

In an effort to improve performance and streamline how the plugin works and operates, we have made some changes to the functionality and behavior of WP Activity Log in a multi-site environment.

  • Activity Logs are now automatically propagated from child sites to the main site. It is no longer possible to switch this off; if a child site has WP Activity Log installed, logs will be propagated to the main site.
  • By default, WP Activity Log will fetch the latest 300 activity log events with each call it makes. If there are more records, additional calls will be made until all Child site logs are propagated to the Dashboard site. Kindly ensure you adjust the log retention settings accordingly.
  • If you’re running an extension with custom event IDs on any of the child sites, these will also be propagated to the Dashboard site. If that extension is not installed on the Dashboard site, the data will still propagate; however, it will be incomplete.
  • It is no longer possible to enable/disable specific events on the child sites through the MainWP Dashboard site. Specific events must be disabled from the child site you want them disabled on.
